This shirt is an artistic rendition of different areas around Cherokee Nation, past (east) and present (west). Some of these locations were never illustrated or photographed in their natural state before being developed or partially destroyed.
The first line is of the Hiwassee River, facing east towards the rising sun. I was thinking of somewhere near Murphy, North Carolina when I made it, which was near the Cherokee towns Tsanusi/Canuce and Nottley.
The second line is of Oologah Lake, Oklahoma in present day Cherokee Nation.
The third line is of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the early 1900s a tourist attraction was built on top of it, and no images exist of it's original state. Chief John Ross' home and ferry was near this location.
The fourth line is of the flat open terrain of Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma.
The fifth line is of Nickajack Cave in Tennessee at sunset. This cave was flooded by the addition of a dam in the 1960s, and no images exist of what it may have looked like inside. No archaeological work was done before it was flooded, and it's history is unknown.
At the bottom is the translation for "Cherokee Nation."
A more detailed printable lesson can be found here, which is perfect to include when sending this as a gift: Cherokee Nation Guide
